Sitting Properly to Avoid Pressure Sores

This is a tip to make sure you are sitting on the right cushion.

Make sure that you are sitting on the best cushion possible based on your specific needs. The occupational therapist or doctor can prescribe this for you. If you are not sitting on the right cushion you can get pressure sores very easily. Pressure sores are bad and may require you to do bed rest in order for them to heal properly if they do heal.

If you have a disability that affects your ability to feel your behind, you are probably at an increased risk for pressure sores. Make sure to examine your behind at least twice a day. If you can not do this yourself, get your helper properly trained in what to look for and have them do it. Even if you can do it yourself, you should ask for guidance from your medical provider in what to look for in your special condition.

Several manufactures make wheelchair cushions. Over the years I have personally tried several of them and for me I like the Roho cushion the best. It is a cushion that is filled with air. The cushion has several projections that allow the air to move around with the smallest movements. Often, I forget or am too weak to do lifts which help with pressure sore prevention. So the Roho cushion moves and the pressure is adjusted when I adjust my wheelchair without me even thinking about it.

If you have ever had a pressure sore, you know what a pain it is. Make sure to use preventative techniques to avoid these unfortunate complications from being a wheelchair user. Make sure to always talk to your medical professional about any problems and special needs that you may have while sitting in your wheelchair.

Do you have any suggestions for the readers? If so please add to the comments and let us know. Maybe you have a brand of cushion that you like.

Alice - Free Shipping & $10 off $50 for new customers

Having a disability can be an obstacle in so many areas, especially going out and doing shopping. I found this great company that I want to share with you that will allow you to get items delivered to your door with no shipping charges.

What a great service. If you have not tried Alice yet, you need to. They offer free shipping on every order, $10 off your first accumulation of $50, and on top of that they have great coupons that are taken off instantly. My first order with them was for about $25 after all my discounts and deals, and I got tons of stuff.

This is a great company to because they have those basic items that everyone needs. I order baby food from them that is far cheaper from them then the local companies. My little girl loves the Gerber pasta and cheese pick-ups and they sell them for $1.10 regular price. At the local Vons, they are $1.69. So I not only save lots of money but it is convenient as well. With the free shipping I can order what I need when I need it. They also remind me when I might be running low on an item.

When you click on their link you will get the $10 off $50 or more sign up bonus. I used this on my first order, but I believe they will combine your orders if you do not order $50 on the first time.

My strategy to with them is see what is on sale with their coupons, you can save tons by doing this. If you need other tips post and I will try to give some more money saving strategies for Alice.

Join the Local Groups

Make sure that you join the local 'support' group for people with your type of disability, or even a general group for people with disablities. One such group is Californians for Disability Rights (CDR), or http://www.disabilityrights-cdr.org/. This group helps to support the rights of people with disabilities.

If you are interested make sure to follow up and send in the enrollment form. No groups in your area? Start one, make your own support group if need be. A lot of times the national organizations will help with materials and other support services to help you to get your group going.

So make it a goal this week for yourself to go to a support group or to start one. Please post a comment and let us know what resources you have in your local area. I will also try to start a listing of resources so when you are looking you will be able to look here to find a comprehensive list. So help me out and add some resources.

Conferences and Trade Shows for People with Disabilities

If possible attend these events and get free disability related products and support. Some companies will even fix your wheelchair up for free at these events. A great one is Permobil, at the last Abilities Expo I went to they put new tires on my chair, new headrest upholstry, new arm piece and lots of other little fixes. It was fantastic and what a cost saver. Free! They were so kind and nice that it really makes me want another Permobil wheelchair.

So if you are looking for information make sure to attend a conference. Drug companies are also big givers. I attended an Multiple Sclersosis conference and they even sent us all to Sea World and fed us for free. Not only did the conference offer information on Multiple Sclerosis but it also gave me lots of great contacts. If you have to travel for the conference make sure to check out the traveling blog for discounts and advice for traveling with a disability.
